A Great Miracle, the River Called Devure

1 This river is called Devure, a river that had finished many people by sweeping them away year after year; even white people were swept away by that same river.

2 When Matenga passed by there, she saw all the evil spirits that were doing the work of sweeping people away, present there doing their work as in all other years.

3 Matenga went to remove those evil water spirits, who were the likes of Masairire and Machingura, who had stayed there for a very long time doing their work.

4 But Matenga went there and prayed over the remedy of the water of that stream.

5 Matenga asked these evil spirits,"What is your main work?"

6 They said,"We are water spirits; we live only here in the water."

7 "We killed many so that we might increase; but we are many, we are water spirits."

8 Then one day Matenga said,said, "Those people who were taken by the river are watching closely to see when Matenga will come to remove us.will come to remove us."

9 "Because they had all been transformed into fish."

10 All those spirits that were in that river were removed.

11 While they were being removed, we heard ululations sounding, to show their removal from that stream.

12 While they were being removed, Matenga was sprinkling her water of remedy, crossing that river while the people were singing.

13 When we reached the middle of the river, Matenga remained there praying; she prayed facing the west where they had been taken by the river.

14 When Matenga finished, she said,"Come, my children, just singing. Let us go back."When we were outside the river, we knelt and Matenga prayed again together with S. Mhundwa, Mai Nyamushanya, and others.

15 Matenga said,"Let whoever has spiritual eyes look at Machingura and Masairire; look also at the people being brought out of the river."

16 We crossed again, but Matenga continued to trail her shawl called Shumba, waving her shawl over the stream called Devure (Devil River).

17 During the whole time this work was being done, not a single vehicle passed by, while Matenga performed her work.
