Matenga First Arrives at Umtali
Matenga traveled with her people, coming from Chitsunge to Mutare.
A vast multitude of people were waiting for her, as the word had reached them.
White people and black people were waiting expectantly.
When they arrived at Murapa’s hotel, some passed on to the place that had been prepared at 11 miles Chipinge Road.
But Matenga had remained behind. She followed later to that place which had been prepared; that place then became known as the City of Refuge (Guta reRutiziro).
A vast multitude gathered there. A small iron-roofed house was built for Matenga ; King Zimunya, the owner of that land, came.
He had come to see Matenga , as he had been informed.
He came with two cattle and five sacks of mealie-meal.
To give to Matenga and the people she was traveling with.
The following day, the Native Commissioner , the Ngosi of Great Mutare, came to see Matenga’s work, as he had been told about it.
But it was still morning.
He said, “I heard of your fame while you were still in Seke, and I even read about it in the newspapers.”
“Now today I will see it for myself with my own eyes.” The Ngosi said, “I want you to show me all your work.”
When Matenga heard this, she did not refuse; she agreed wholeheartedly.
A vast multitude had gathered, having come to see as well.
Some were converted right there.
Then Matenga began to show the children.
First to be shown was the firstborn she had first blessed for conception, the child of Mai Chengetai, whose name is Daniel.
This woman had spent sixteen years without a child, never even feeling any labor pains.
She only conceived because of Matenga . The Ngosi was also shown a line of children, and women who had spent many years without children but now had them.
He was also shown the disabled who were now walking, the blind who were now seeing, those who had been barren for years who were now pregnant, and various other illnesses.
He was also shown how she heals each and every disease; it was truly awe-inspiring, and he was amazed by the healing.
For she heals with only her hand; by being touched, one is healed, without any medicine, but by the hand alone.
The Ngosi was very impressed and said, “Matenga , do all your work, which is very excellent.”
“It is known by the whole country; stay wherever you please, doing your work here, which is very good.”
The Ngosi commended her work here, which was very good, and then he departed.
When it became Saturday, the people had gathered in great numbers.
Matenga showed the work she had come for among the congregation (chita ) of people who were there.
That is the other great work she was sent for: to remove evil spirits of demons.
She took a certain woman who had her father's demon.
When Matenga bound that person, the demon came out and spoke, saying, “I killed my wife.”
“I removed her head and put it under the seat of my car.”
“Because I wanted to be rich, I did all this,” it said, “that is how I was getting money.”
This demon said, “It was cast out of heaven; it has no place.”
“Because in heaven there are no houses for murderers; I am burning, I have no place”; then the demon said, “I want five shillings,” and it was given, and then it left.
This amazed the vast multitude of people who were there.
Some of them right there came to confess their sins as well.
Some there were even being possessed by demons, and no one could find an opportunity.
Others also brought charms, horns, fetishes, and all the traditional medicines they used to follow worldly ways.
Everything was burned by these two young men, Beta and Jemusi.
They were given power by Matenga to do that work.
A vast multitude was converted; hundreds upon hundreds had hands laid on their heads by Matenga .
Even white people came to confess their sins that they had committed against God .
Many of those had hands laid on them by Matenga .
Because they had seen the truth of Matenga .
